Memory as evidence selection
Xinyu Zhang and Weiwei Sun published Agent Memory as Recommendation on October 26, 2026. Their AgentMemRec approach selects memories through retrieval, learned ranking and filling a bounded context. Selection makes no language-model calls; that does not mean the entire assistant answers without a language model.
The authors report improvements over the systems they compare, with the main multi-session test covering 209 questions. This is a research evaluation, not independently established superiority in every product. The answering models and evaluation conditions limit how far the result can be generalized.
Why finding a record may not be enough
Our editorial example is an assistant remembering an appointment. One conversation gives the day, another changes the location, and a third states who must confirm attendance. Retrieving only the most similar record could produce a plausible answer that omits something essential. This example is invented for explanation, rather than taken from a study participant.
The question consequently shifts from finding related text to gathering what is needed for this particular answer. Selection has a budget: more material occupies context and may introduce contradictions. In our view, evaluation should show which necessary records were omitted, instead of relying solely on an aggregate grade for the final response.
A useful assessment would also distinguish evidence availability from evidence use. A record might be present in the selected context but still be ignored by the answering model. Conversely, an apparently correct answer could arise without retrieving the record that should support it. Preserving the selected material beside the answer would make those cases easier to inspect.
The LongMemEval background
LongMemEval's official repository describes 500 questions testing chat assistants' long-term memory. The abilities include information extraction, multi-session reasoning, temporal reasoning, knowledge updates and abstention when an answer lacks support. This is a broader set of requirements than retrieving one remembered fact.
The repository also identifies a cleaned release of the conversation histories. The dataset name alone therefore does not fully specify an experiment. Version, history variant and evaluation method matter for comparability. The new paper uses a subset for its main multi-session result; we do not equate its 209 questions with the complete set of 500.
These distinctions are relevant when a supplier presents a benchmark score as evidence for deployment. The same label can conceal different input histories or different questions. We would ask for the exact configuration before treating two scores as a direct comparison. That is an editorial evaluation principle, not a finding from a test we performed.
A second dataset examines long conversations
LoCoMo, introduced by its authors for ACL 2024, contains ten long conversations annotated for question answering, event summarization and multimodal dialogue. Its structure preserves sessions and timestamps. It is a separate research setting, rather than ten real customer deployments.
Our assessment is that success on these tasks should not automatically be extended to an agent's authority to modify records or take external actions. Memory may support an answer, but current permission requires a separate check. An old statement of intent is not necessarily a valid instruction today.
What we would test before using it
In a proposed pilot, we would hold the answering model fixed and compare selection methods under equal context budgets. Memory preparation costs would be separated from per-question costs, and source evidence would be kept alongside each answer. SIExpo has not conducted these experiments.
Particularly useful cases would involve a corrected fact, a cancelled arrangement and missing information. Persuasive wording is not a success criterion in those situations. The system should show why an old record remains applicable or has been superseded, and acknowledge an evidence gap.
The new work offers a concrete approach to more efficient selection. Reliability of an entire memory system remains a broader task than choosing relevant fragments.
