Swiss AI published detailed Apertus 1.5 release notes on 15 October 2026. The weights themselves were released on 24 July, as the new article explicitly states. The current development is therefore a fuller technical account, rather than the model's first appearance. The family includes variants with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters.
What multimodal means in this case
The public model card describes text, image and audio inputs, but text-only output. Its stated maximum context is 262,144 tokens, while spoken-language support remains experimental. These distinctions constrain which applications can reasonably be expected from the package. Understanding audio does not automatically provide speech generation.
The September ecosystem update had already discussed deployment and the need for suitable serving-software versions. A technical report was submitted to arXiv on 11 October. Together, these sources establish the chronology: summer weights, subsequent integration work and October documentation. A later article date does not establish that every capability described in it first became available yesterday.
One model, several application contracts
Our practical interpretation is to begin with the input and output contract. A hypothetical document-analysis service might use an image as input for a textual explanation. A voice product would need other components if the user expects a spoken response. The broad label multimodal does not describe every one of those components or establish that the complete application already exists.
For a proposed pilot, we would examine recognition accuracy, explanation quality and behavior under insufficient input separately. When an image is blurred or an audio segment unclear, a useful result may acknowledge missing information. We would not define success merely as always producing a well-formatted answer. The relevant question is whether the output is supported by what was actually supplied.
Open weights begin the deployment work
Self-hosting allows a team to choose its execution environment. It does not remove decisions about resources, tool permissions or outbound connections. In a hypothetical internal assistant, we would specify which component can read documents, which can send requests and which may persist changes. Those are properties of the surrounding system, rather than automatic consequences of a model being downloadable.
The context window also deserves testing in the chosen runtime and workload. For a proposed long-document evaluation, we would place known facts in different sections and check whether answers recover them correctly. Accepting a long input and reliably using its information are separate tests. SIExpo has not run such a benchmark on Apertus and is not presenting its own performance result.
The release notes help teams ask more precise questions about a package that is already available. A real application still needs a verifiable pilot with a selected model variant, software version and representative tasks. Openness makes more of these choices inspectable, but does not automatically establish quality, privacy or compatibility for every use. That distinction is the practical value of reading the current documentation alongside the model's actual release history.
