On October 29, Hugging Face presented the public weights of Mistral Large 4. This is a separate step from Mistral's October 6 API preview. Today's development is access to the model for self-hosted execution, rather than the product's first appearance.

What developers receive

According to the model card, the model accepts text and images and produces text. Its Mixture-of-Experts architecture has about one trillion total parameters. Official FP8 and NVFP4 versions are available, with NVFP4 targeting Blackwell hardware.

Mistral's model card distinguishes 49 billion active parameters from 52 billion when input and output layers are included. It specifies a one-million-token context. The Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License is a modified MIT licence requiring a separate commercial agreement for operating a Model-as-a-Service business.

That distinction matters in practice. Downloadable weights provide more control over the execution environment, but access alone does not settle infrastructure or contractual questions. A team building an internal assistant for employees and a provider selling model access to customers need to evaluate different scenarios. Describing this as an open-weight release is more precise than promising unrestricted use.

Capacity and configuration are different

Hugging Face's published vLLM example sets the maximum length to 131,072 tokens. That is a particular serving configuration, rather than a revision of the model's advertised capacity.

Our editorial assessment is that an organisation should treat self-hosting as a system, rather than a single downloaded file. It needs storage for the weights, memory for the working context and defined boundaries for documents and tools. A large advertised context does not mean every installation will process that maximum at the same speed or under the same load.

For example, an internal technical-documentation assistant might receive manual extracts and images of diagrams. Its answer should point to a verifiable passage or clearly flag uncertainty. Giving the same system permission to execute actions is a separate engineering decision: the ability to suggest a command is not sufficient grounds to run it. This is an illustrative use case, not a Large 4 experiment we conducted.

What SIExpo has not verified

We have not run the model or reproduced its comparative tests. We therefore do not infer an overall quality ranking or guaranteed cost savings. The material change is that organisations can evaluate self-hosted operation under the specific licence, instead of depending exclusively on the earlier API preview.
